A cytokine storm is a physiological reaction in humans in which the innate immune system causes the excessive and uncontrolled secretion of cytokines, small proteins secreted by the immune system as part of the immune response when an infection occurs. Sudden large amounts can cause "multiple organ dysfunction syndrome." Cytokine storms might result from a number of infectious and non-infectious causes, particularly viral respiratory infections.
