Seminar at College of Pharmacy Discusses Infliximab Resistance in patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease( IBD)
2025 / 04 / 20

As part of its academic activities , the College of Pharmacy in collaboration with the Clinical Pharmacy Department, the Lifelong Learning Unit , held a seminar : "Resistance to Infliximab in IBD" presented by Asst. Prof.Dr. Ahmed Kadhim Al-Jalehawi on Sunday, April 20, 2025.

The seminar addressed the problem of resistance to infliximab in some patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), whether primary resistance that appears from the start of treatment or secondary resistance resulting from loss of response over time despite a good initial response.

The lecturer explained the mechanisms of this resistance in detail, addressing immunological factors such as the emergence of antibodies to the drug and genetic differences between patients, as well as the role of drug interactions and environmental factors. He emphasized the importance of regular monitoring of drug and antibody levels as a means of improving therapeutic outcomes.

Resistance to infliximab is a real challenge in the management and treatment of inflammatory bowel diseases, necessitating continuous updating of treatment strategies and the adoption of accurate diagnostic methods to determine the type of resistance. Furthermore, scientific research should be strengthened to develop more effective alternative biological therapies with less immunostimulation.

Finally, the College of Pharmacy extends its sincere thanks and appreciation to Prof. Ahmed Kadhim Al-Jalehawi for his valuable information and to all attendees and participants in this distinguished scientific event.
